You’ve probably noticed those tiny, annoying stickers that appear on most fruit – Here is the secret behind that “code”:
There is a bar code on the sticker, that is for the check-out clerk.
There is also a number on that annoying little sticker. View it before you purchase that next banana. It will be either a 4-digit or a 5-digit number.
4-digit number = Conventionally-grown, but not organic
5-digit number, that Begins with the number “9” = Organic
5-digit number, that Begins with the number “8” = Genetically Modified
Example:
4322 = Conventionally-grown, but not organic
94322 = Organic
84322 = Genetically Modified

What do the produce sticker numbers mean that are four digit and begin with a 3? I have noticed these recently.
Thank you!

Linda,
All combinations of the four-digit code beginning with the “4″ have been used, therefore labels beginning with the number “3″ will be substituting the “4″ to designate conventionally raised produce.
